Yorkshire Day 2021
3rd September 2021
Yorkshire Day was marked all over the historic county, from York to Saddleworth, Bowland and Dent. The Yorkshire Ridings committee and friends walked the York city walls as always, stopping at the bars facing the Ridings to read out the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity. (Micklegate Bar faces the West Riding, Bootham Bar the North Riding and Monk Bar the East Riding). Afterwards, as is customary, they were met by the Lord Mayor.
In Uppermill the Saddleworth White Rose Society held its annual Yorkshire Country Fair, as successful as ever, whilst in Bowland a YRS member placed White Rose flags around the villages of Bolton By Bowland and Slaidburn. At Dent, St. Andrew's Church flew a large Yorkshire flag.
Yorkshire Day was started by the Yorkshire Ridings Society with the aim of marking and indeed highlighting the historic county and its boundary. Other groups have since become involved in various ways around Yorkshire making it a well-known annual event. This is to be greatly welcomed though we need to stress that the original and proper intention is to re-affirm the historic and proper county boundary. Hence the importance of events in Saddleworth (currently under the administration of Greater Manchester), Bowland (by Lancashire) and Dent (Cumbria).
